Sliding Puzzle: Solving 4×4 Row by Row
A calm, methodical way to solve the 4x4 sliding puzzle: lock rows top to bottom, use the corner trick, and finish the bottom two together.
The 4×4 sliding puzzle is one of those games that looks like it should be easy and then quietly humbles you. Fifteen numbered tiles, one empty square, and a simple goal: slide them around until the numbers run in order. The trouble is that every move you make to fix one tile tends to knock another out of place, and beginners often spend twenty minutes shuffling in circles, getting close and then falling apart. There is a better way, and it is not about being clever. It is about being methodical.
The method is to solve the puzzle in fixed stages, locking pieces into place a row and a column at a time, so that the part you have finished never has to move again. The plan in one sentence
Solve the top row, then the next row, until only the bottom two rows are left, and finish those two rows together column by column. That is the whole strategy. The reason it works is that each finished section shrinks the puzzle. Once the top row is correct and you promise never to disturb it, you are effectively solving a smaller 3×4 puzzle underneath, then a 2×4, and the smaller the working area, the easier it is to keep the whole thing in your head.
Everything below is just the detail of how to place tiles without wrecking what you have already finished. Take it slowly the first few times. Speed comes on its own once the sequence is familiar.
Solving the top row
Work left to right. Place tile 1 in the top-left corner first, then tile 2 beside it, and so on. Moving a single tile is a matter of shuffling the empty square around to nudge your target where you want it. The empty square is your only tool, so think of solving as steering that blank hole to the spot behind whichever tile you are trying to move, then letting the tile slide into the gap.
Place the first two or three tiles of the row directly. The one that causes beginners grief is always the last tile in the row, the top-right corner, because sliding it into place tends to shove the tile next to it back out. That specific problem has a specific fix, and it is worth learning once and remembering forever.
The corner trick for the last tile in a row
To finish a row without breaking it, do not try to place the final two tiles one at a time. Instead, set them up as a pair. Take the top row as the example. You want 3 and 4 in the last two spots. Put tile 3 into the top-right corner, the position where 4 is supposed to go, and put tile 4 in the square directly beneath it. The two tiles are now stacked in the corner, one above the other, ready to roll into place.
From that stacked setup, a short rotation of the empty square swings both tiles into their correct positions at once: 3 slides left into its slot and 4 slides up into the corner. Because they move together, neither knocks the other out. The same trick works for the left end of a row if your puzzle numbers that way, just mirrored. This one manoeuvre is the single most valuable thing to memorise, because it solves the “last tile keeps popping back out” problem that stalls almost everyone.
Working down the middle rows
With the top row locked, repeat the exact same process on the second row, treating it as the new top edge of a smaller puzzle. Solve its left tiles directly, then use the corner-pair trick for its final two tiles. Keep the completed top row untouched the entire time; if you ever find yourself needing to slide a finished tile, you have wandered off the method and should back up.
Do this until only two rows remain at the bottom. Do not try to solve the third row on its own and then the fourth. The last two rows have to be solved together, because with so little space left there is not enough room to lock one row without trapping the other. This is the one place the pattern changes, so slow down when you reach it.
Finishing the bottom two rows
For the final two rows, switch from thinking in rows to thinking in columns. Take the leftmost column of the remaining block and place its two tiles as a vertical pair, using the same stacking idea as the corner trick but rotated. Put the upper tile and the lower tile next to each other near the left edge, then rotate the empty square to roll them both into their column at once.
Move column by column to the right. Each pair you lock reduces the free space, and the tiles funnel naturally toward their homes. When you are down to the last little cluster in the bottom-right, the remaining tiles usually have only one legal arrangement and click into order with a few final slides. If they do not, that points to something worth understanding about the puzzle itself.
When the last three tiles will not cooperate
Occasionally you reach the end and the final few tiles sit in a stubborn loop, rotating past their targets no matter what you do. Before assuming you made a mistake, know this: not every arrangement of a sliding puzzle can be solved. Roughly half of all random scrambles are reachable positions and half are not, depending on how the tiles were shuffled. If a puzzle was generated by placing tiles at random rather than by scrambling a solved board, it may simply be an unsolvable layout.
The good news is that any puzzle you create by starting solved and sliding tiles around is always solvable, because legal moves can never turn a solvable board into an impossible one. So if you scrambled it yourself with real slides, keep going; the corner and column tricks will get you there. If you are stuck on a truly frozen end-state that you did not scramble by hand, it is fair to reset and start fresh rather than chase a solution that does not exist.
Building speed once it works
The first time through, this method feels like following a recipe, and that is exactly right. Do not rush. Concentrate on never disturbing a finished section and on recognising the moment to switch from rows to columns at the bottom. Accuracy first; the clock can wait.
